Hunger Flower is the 3 a.m. poetic gut-punch from your angry best friend / is the 7 a.m. body refusing to get out of bed for another day of productivity / is mid-day interstellar synths / and electric, bass-heavy daydreams of self-indulgent sheep / is bone-deep murmurs becoming ink-dipped screams by midnight / is twilit, melancholic serenades for our beloved / is an anthem / for Resistance cloaked in equal parts fight and love.

Bio

Hunger Flower is a songwriting trio of Dav James, ViNa Nguyen, and Deifante Walters, bringing together Welsh, French, Vietnamese, and Jamaican roots to unequivocally unsettle the status quo. The trio draws upon their individual and collective experiences from previous projects (Palliser, Emblematics, Vina After Dark) of pop, jazz, progressive rock, and trip hop influences to craft heavier, moodier soundscapes for Hunger Flower.

Their love for dark, saturated synths, catchy riffs, dynamism, and unresolving melodies, has penned this unapologetic alt. rock love letter to those whose hearts haven’t hardened from heartbreak.

Dafydd (Dav) James (he/him)

Dav is a performing musician and music producer in Mohkínstsis/Calgary, on Treaty 7 territory. Actively the guitarist, producer, keyboardist, and songwriter of Hunger Flower, Dav brings extensive musical experience from France, Canada, and the UK, having lived, practiced, and performed music in all three places equally.

ViNa Nguyá»…n (she/they)

An award-winning fiction writer from the Vietnamese diaspora, ViNa was born and raised on Treaty 6 and 7 territories and began songwriting after medical school, leading to their singer-songwriter EP, From the Basement, and their full-production EP with Dav James in Us Vs. They are the primary lyricist and vocalist behind Hunger Flower’s music.

Deifante Walters (he/him)

Deifante began drumming in 2008 and performed live in Mohkínstsis/Calgary as a member of three different bands. He’s played on four home-recorded albums and one studio album.

He’s built his skills from drumming weekly for four years to an audience of 50, while playing and improvising to unfamiliar music and helping with sound engineering.
